Sweet Treat

I couldn't resist doing a bit of baking this evening so I made some scones and they turned out lovely and light. We ate one each straight out of the oven with butter and ginger and apple jam, oooo they hit the spot.

I keep thinking I should reign in the baking of sweet things a bit (I've, er, put on a bit of a 'Winter coat') but is it really that bad for me compared to the sweet stuff I'd buy if I didn't bake and wanted a treat? At least this way I'm doing something I enjoy and eating food that's free of preservatives and additives and where I can see exactly how much sugar, fat and salt's going in. It's not healthy but I think it must be better to have a home made scone with butter and good quality jam than a chocolate bar or ready made pudding. And this is more fun that nipping round to the shop for something sickly sweet and wrapped in plastic.

  1. I baked scones today too - fruit ones , and also some chocolate chip ones for J and KL. We had them warm from the oven too, with a cup of tea when J got home from work. I agree completely about baking. I make all my own stuff. If I didn't KL would want chocolate biscuits and things which are full of goodness knows what. My baking is far better for all of us , especially as I reduce the amount of sugar required in a recipe. Scones are quite low in fat too compared with other cakes!

  2. I agree 100% you'll never regret eating home baking like you would store bought. Your scones look lovely :)

  3. Thanks Astra, you're right about not regretting home baking vs store bought and also when I bake stuff it makes me take a moment to think "Do I really want to eat this or am just bored/fed up/craving?" - rather than swooping down on a packet of biscuits and devouring them. Scarlet it's funny you mentioned chocolate chip scones; as me and Mr CB were tucking into this batch we were discussing how great choc chip scones would be - it simply must be done.

  4. I always maintain that a bit of an extra 'winter coat' serves a purpose...it is winter & we wouldn't crave the 'winter-coat-food' unless it was necessary- am now off to consume mashed potatoes! (by the summer I'll only want lettuce- there is some method in the madness!)
