I got two lovely vintage items from charity shops today. The first is this heavily beaded and embroidered top. It's made of a soft knit fabric (it feels a bit like angora but not fluffy) and is lined, with a zip up the back.
I've done a bit of searching and the label in the top was used in clothes imported from Hong King in the 1950's and 1960's. I think it will look good with a pair of jeans and high heels, both plain to balance out the ornate top. Admittedly, I have no idea what occasion I'll wear it for, but it was love at first sight and I had to bring it home with me.
The other item I fell for was this jug, about 1 litre, made by Ford and Sons of Burslem. I fell for it's elegant shape and delicate gilding; it looks really special to me. I'll have it out on display and use if for flowers next time I get some.
I've looked up the mark and it was made around 1910. I wonder who bought it originally and why? Maybe it was a special gift or something someone fell in love with and saved up for.
Something I enjoy about very old things from charity shops is wondering about the people wo owned them before were like. What occasion was the top purchased for and was the owner happy with their choice? How many people have owned the jug since it was made 115 years ago? Second hand objecys carry their mysteries and I think that gives them a special character.
